A Hippie AND a Christian? A Christian Hippie is an individual that possesses characteristics from both types of these “non-conforming” groups. In addition to spreading the gospel, Hippie Christians promote their adoration and concern for Peace & Love, Music and Environmental Awareness thru the teachings of The Bible. You can read more about Christian Hippies, including their origin within “The Jesus Movement” of the 1970’s, HERE. While there are many ways to witness to a Brother or Sister, hopefully one of these simple Retro Christian t-shirts will present an opportunity for you to meet someone, somewhere and share your faith.

What is a Christian Hippie?

Christian: A person who adheres to Christianity, a monotheistic religion centered on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ as presented in the New Testament of The Bible and interpreted by Christians to have been prophesied in the Hebrew Bible, or Old Testament.Jesus Christ is central to Christianity as the foundation of salvation, the revealer of God, and the model of a pious life; not just as a teacher, but as the Son of God who suffered, died and was resurrected for the salvation of all from sin.

Hippie: A person, especially of the late 1960’s era, who opposes and rejects many of the conventional standards and customs of society, especially one who advocates extreme liberalism in sociopolitical attitudes and lifestyles. Rejections of these rules are often expressed externally, as in the wearing of long hair, casual & folksy clothing, beads, headbands, etc. Hippies oppose political and social orthodoxy, choosing a gentle and non-doctrinaire ideology that favors peace, love and personal freedom. They also commonly support environmental awareness, unadulterated foods, vegetarianism, eastern philosophies, music, and often times, the use of psychedelic drugs.

1) Can someone be a Christian AND a Hippie?

Yes they can, but not entirely by the definition of “hippie” stated above. You see, Christian Hippies have been around since the early 1970’s. They initiated what was known as “The Jesus Movement”, the major Christian element within the hippie counterculture, or, conversely, the major hippie element within the Christian Church. Members of the movement were called “Jesus people”, or “Jesus freaks”.While they favored the hippie’s appearance and their embracing of peace and love, they did not promote the use of drugs, but instead chose to get “high on Jesus”.The worship services in the Jesus movement paved the way for the development of modern worship services and music, particularly musical subgenres such as Contemporary Christian Music and Christian Rock.

Just as the “60’s Hippies” were seen as non-conformists, Christians, in many ways, should also adopt the same approach, especially in today’s immoral society.Of course, we are referring to scriptures John 15:19 and Colossians 2:8.While we in no way condone the secular actions of the early hippies (drug use, sexual liberation, eastern religion, etc), we do respect and promote their adoration for Peace & Love, Music & Art, Simplicity and the Environment, based on the scriptures that follow:

~PEACE & LOVE~

Here are just a few of the many verses that command us to love one another:

Leviticus 19:17-18

17 Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbor, and not suffer sin upon him. 18 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself: I am the LORD

Matthew 5: 43-46

43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you. 45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

*This includes ALL mankind: From Friends to Enemies; Black to White; Bums to Billionaires. Now, what about the Islamic radicals that insist on killing us?Without turning this site into an online debate, all I can say is see what Jesus says in the above scripture, which tells us to pray for them.

1 Corinthians 13

1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. 4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. 13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is LOVE.

~ART & MUSIC~

Music is an incredible gift from God with great power of expression. Here are just a few scriptures that mention and defend the playing of music:

2 Samuel 6:5

5 Then David and all the house of Israel played music before the LORD on all kinds of instruments of fir wood, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on sistrums, and on cymbals.

Psalm 81:2

2 Raise a song and strike the timbrel,
The pleasant harp with the lute.

Psalm 92 1-3

1 It is good to give thanks to the LORD,
And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High;
2 To declare Your loving kindness in the morning,
And Your faithfulness every night,
3 On an instrument of ten strings,
On the lute,
And on the harp,
With harmonious sound.

~THE ENVIRONMENT~

From a biblical perspective "the environment" is actually a part of God's creation, of which humanity is also a part of, and there are many scriptures that support the importance of caring for it.

The Evangelical Environmental Network is a non-profit organization that seeks to educate, inspire, and mobilize Christians in their effort to care for God’s creation, to be faithful stewards of God’s provision, and to advocate for actions and policies that honor God and protect the environment. They have an entire page of scriptures and their relation to our environment HERE.

2) Do you have to dress like a “hippie”, or be a certain age to be a Christian Hippie?

Of course not. As we say, “It’s a state of mind”; which means a Christian Hippie is a Christian with a hippie mind set.In other words, you’re a Believer that cares about and promotes environmental awareness, peace & love and the arts; as well as His hippest gift of all, Salvation!

3) Do Christians have to listen only to “Christian Music”?

This is a highly debated subject and we are not to judge what kind of music you listen to. Personally, we like and listen to most genres of music, as long as it is not immoral. There are many great secular songs that have been written about love, loss, the country, city streets, history, midnight skies, sunsets, dreams, etc. There are also many great instrumentals in genres such as Jazz and Classical. These compositions aren't found in the “Christian Music” section of a record store.Does that mean you shouldn’t listen to them?Again, it is not our position to tell you what music to listen to.

*I found the following interesting response online: “Also, I must admit upfront that I didn't swear off secular music when I became a Christian (actually, I was eight when I accepted the Lord and listening to secular music came later). Although I certainly realize that the message some secular bands are presenting is definitely bad and I am offended by some of this, I don't personally believe that a Christian has to sequester themselves into a little virtual world where the only music that exists is Christian-related music. It amazes me that someone will argue that a Christian should only listen to Christian music and then take their kids to see an obviously secular "family movie" like the usual Disney fare. If "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" is okay, what's wrong with "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother?" I apologize if this offends you, but I fail to see the distinction.” – Read article HERE

4) Do you have to get stoned, drunk, or drop out to be a Christian Hippie?

Again, of course not!The whole idea is to be a CHRISTIAN Hippie. However, as stated above, it’s not our job to judge you or what you do.But we will say this, all the “expansion” in the world that you try to do to your mind can not compare to what the Holy Spirit can do to it.When you “come down” (and you will), you’ll always have that void that wasn’t filled. You’ll never experience what only Christ can give you – TRUE peace.Ask any born-again brother or sister that’s done their share of experimenting and they’ll tell you that the emptiness you experience (that longing feeling inside that you can’t really identify) can only be filled by Jesus :)
